Oh you're simply wonderful
Character:
Deity Name: Cosmetics
Pantheon: New God
Current Alias: Goes by Matthew Kohl currently, but is also known as Cheveux L'Oréal, Estée Lauder (or William P. Lauder), Max Factor, Revlon Almay, and Mac depending on who you talk to.
Apparent Age: Who knows. He can make himself look pretty much any age that he likes. It varies from day to day.
Occupation: Professional kept man
Personality: Cosmetics is a pretty flamboyant guy. But don't take that the wrong way. Just because he likes wearing makeup and women's clothing, and use feminine products doesn't really mean anything when it comes to his sexuality. He's all for the ladies.
He's a generally sweet kind of guy and doesn't have a vicious bone in his body. He likes to help, and likes to gab on with the girls about the most recent fashions and fashion statements. He loves going to shows and loves shopping. But he also really likes guy things too. Like building stuff.
But he's definitely not a guy's guy. A man's man. Guys who aren't secure might find themselves put off or offended by him.
Cosmetics is a little bit flighty and a little bit flirty. He's a touch risky and more than a little bit frisky.
History: Cosmetics, the substances used to enhance or protect the appearance or odor of the human body, have been around since at least 4000 BC, where the earliest known example was found in Ancient Egypt. But they certainly didn't get really fun until the middle of the 20th century which is when he really gained his power and started running around in a human-style body.. Cosmetics include skin-care creams, lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail and toenail polishes, eye and facial makeup, permanent waves, colored contact lenses, hair colors, hair sprays and gels, deodorants, baby products, bath oils, bubble baths, bath salts, butters and many other types of products, each one absolutely beloved by their patron god.
And yes, it's patron god, not goddess. Maybe a little bit odd that something so predominantly used by women would be represented in the world of deities as male. Perhaps it was due to the mild confusion of early use by aristocratic males to enhance the paleness of their skin, or create a beauty mark that they didn't actually have. Or maybe it was just because he damned well felt like being male, thank you.
This new day and age is absolutely ripe with many different cosmetic companies, and products, for that matter. More than any one person could have dreamed of. It makes Cosmetics absolutely giddy to go into department stores, or Body Works, and see all of the glorious things therein. He likes to spend whole days showing the behind-the-counter girls just what they're doing wrong to themselves and those around them. Teaching them the better techniques.
America was always more free with things, so the decision to make that move wasn't hard at all. Especially after the declaration of Queen Victoria that cosmetics were vulgar and only apropos for prostitutes and actors.
Cosmetics has absolutely thrived since arriving in America. And absolutely adores all the different styles that the Americans have. Even the bad ones.
